Let \(\{X_n,n\geq1\}\) be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables with continuous distribution function. For every integer \(n\geq1\), let \(X_{1:n}\leq\cdots\leq X_{n:n}\) denote the order statistics based on the sample \(X_1,\ldots,X_n\). The paper provides a variety of new results on the asymptotic distributions of random variables of the form \(K_{m:n}(A)=\#\{j\in\{1,\ldots,n\}:X_{m:n}-X_j\in A\}\) for Borel subsets \(A\) of the real line.
