Let \(E(M)\) be the endomorphism ring of a module \(M\) and for any submodule \(N\), let \(P(N)\) denote the submodule of \(M\) generated by the images \([\varphi,\psi]N\) as \(\varphi\) and \(\psi\) run through the idempotents in \(E(M)\). Now define \(P_0(M)=M\) and \(P_{n+1}(M)=P(P_n(M))\). \(N\) is called projectively invariant if \(P(N)=N\) and \(M\) is projectively soluble of class \(n\) if \(n\) is minimal with \(P_n(M)=0\). The author studies the algebraic properties of this construction, and applies it to characterize various classes of Abelian groups \(G\) which are projectively soluble of class \(\leq 2\).
