The authors give a general result that guarantees the existence of a commuting differential operator for a given family of exceptional orthogonal polynomials \(\{q_n(x)\}_{n\in\mathbb N_0}\) satisfying bispectral conditions, i.e., there exist a nontrivial differential operator \(D\) and a nontrivial difference operator \(L\) such that \[ D q_n(x)=\lambda_n q_n(x), \qquad L q_n(x)=\mu_x q_n(x), \] where the eigenvalue \(\lambda_n\) (respectively \(\mu_x\)) depends only on \(n\) (respectively \(x\)). As applications, they consider two different families of exceptional orthogonal polynomials: Hermite and Laguerre exceptional polynomials.
