The authors present higher-order Galerkin finite element methods and error analysis for the fractional cable equation. They prove that the numerical solution converges to the exact solution with order \(O(\tau+h^{l+1})\) for the \(l\)-th-order finite element method where \(\tau\) and \(h\) are the time and space step sizes, and this convergence rate is optimal. A higher-order Galerkin finite element method for improving the order of convergence is proposed. Some numerical results are presented to evaluate the performance of the methods and to illustrate the theoretical analysis.
