The authors characterize those sets in \(\mathrm{PG}(4, q)\), \(q\) odd, \(q\geq 7\), which correspond to conics in \(\mathrm{PG}(2, q^2)\) via the Bruck-Bose correspondence. A similar characterization when \(q\) is even is given in [the authors, ``A characterization of translation ovals in finite even order planes'', Finite Fields Appl. 33, 37--52 (2015; \url{doi:10.1016/j.ffa.2014.11.002})]. The cases when \(q=3\) or 5 are still open.
