Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded, open set in \(\mathbb R^3\) and \((0,T]\) a time interval. The author is looking for weak solutions to the initial boundary value problem of the hyperbolic equation \(\ddot{y} - \operatorname{div}(D W(\nabla y)) = f\) in \(\Omega \times (0,T)\), where \(W\) is a given function which may have singularities corresponding to the Cauchy-Born continuum models for the elastodynamics. The author discusses an atomistic approximation of the continuous problem.
