In [Contemp. Math. 542, 135--149 (2011; Zbl 1230.53068)], \textit{L. Ornea} and \textit{M. Verbitsky} posed the following problem: Construct a compact locally conformal symplectic (lcs) manifold which admits no locally conformal Kähler (lcK) structure. This problem was first solved in [\textit{G. Bande} and \textit{D. Kotschick}, Contemp. Math. 542, 85--98 (2011; Zbl 1222.53082)]. They constructed lcs 4-folds of the form \(M \times S^1\), with \(M\) a compact 3-fold, that do not possess any complex (hence lcK) structure. In the paper under review, the authors construct a \(4\)-dimensional lcs nilmanifold \(N\), that does not possess any complex (hence lcK) structure. Additionally, \(N\) is not diffeomorphic to a \(4\)-fold of the kind \(M \times S^1\), showing that their example is new. Their argument relies, among other things, on the classification of compact complex surfaces.
