\textit{R. Brown} and \textit{J.-L. Loday} [Topology 26, 311--335 (1987; Zbl 0622.55009)] used the non-abelian tensor product \(\otimes\) to describe the third relative homotopy group \(\pi_3(X,A,B)\approx\pi_2(A,C)\otimes \pi_2(B,C)\) of a triad \((X,A,B)\) for \(C=A\cap B\) as a non-abelian tensor product of the second homotopy groups of the appropriate subspaces. Then, \textit{G. J. Ellis} [J. Algebra 111, 203--205 (1987; Zbl 0626.20039)] gave finiteness conditions on \(\pi_n(X)\) when the excision theorem holds by the finiteness of \(\pi_n(A)\), \(\pi_n(B)\) and \(\pi_{n-1}(C)\). \par The authors use finiteness-related results for non-abelian tensor products and prove finiteness conditions for the homotopy groups \(\pi_n(X)\) in terms of the number of tensors. In particular, a quantitative version of the classical Blakers-Massey triad connectivity theorem is established. Moreover, other finiteness conditions and equivalence properties that arise from the non-abelian tensor square are studied. Finally, applications to homotopy pushouts, especially in the case of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces are presented.
