Let \(H_0\) and \(H\) be selfadjoint operators in a Hilbert space. The theme of the paper is to compare the eigenvalue counting functions of the two operators in the framework of perturbation theory. Particularly, the author discusses the Fredholm index of a pair of the spectral projections for the two operators and gives an identity that extends the Birman-Schwinger principle onto the essential spectrum. This index is also related to the spectrum of the scattering matrix for the pair of operators.
