The authors describe a model theory for completely non-coisometric representations of the Hardy algebra of a \(W^*\)-correspondence, which they defined and studied in [Math. Ann. 330, No.~2, 353--415 (2004; Zbl 1066.46049)], and which generalizes the model theory for contraction operators of \textit{B.~Sz.-Nagy} and \textit{C.~Foiaş} [``Harmonic analysis of operators on Hilbert spaces'' (Akademiai Kiado, Budapest and North-Holland, Amsterdam etc.) (1970; Zbl 0201.45003)]. Their study presents a far-reaching extension of a \textit{G.~Popescu}'s work on row contractions [Math. Scand. 68, No.~2, 292--304 (1991; Zbl 0774.46033); Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 124, No.~7, 2137--2148 (1996; Zbl 0864.46043)]. In particular, the authors develop the notion of characteristic operators and functions for such representations, prove an analogue of \textit{D.~Sarason}'s commutant lifting theorem [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 127, 179--203 (1967; Zbl 0145.39303)], and establish the relation between invariant subspaces for representations and factorizations of the characteristic functions.
