For certain classes of hyperbolic flows over basic sets, the authors establish asymptotic counting results of prime geodesic theorem type. In contrast to classical prime geodesic theorems, here the authors restrict to periodic orbits with periods contained in exponentially shrinking intervals \((x-e^{-\delta x}, x+e^{-\delta x})\) for positive \(\delta\) (below topological entropy) and \(x\to\infty\). The classes of hyperbolic flows include geodesic flows on manifolds of constant negative curvature as well as open billiard flows. The proofs are based on spectral estimates for transfer operators associated to symbolic models for the flows. | |||
