The authors give a striking new characterization of the Fibonacci sequence, by showing that it is essentially the unique binary recurrence containing infinitely many three-term arithmetic progressions. In the proofs several deep methods and results are combined, including a theorem of Evertse, Schlickewei and Schmidt on linear equations over finitely generated groups, and results of Schinzel concerning reducibility of trinomials.
