The authors prove an analogue of Ramanujan's Master Theorem for the spherical Fourier transform of a spherical Fourier series. The paper begins with an introductory section which contains notation and some basic references. In Section 1, the authors recall the duality of Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact and noncompact type and introduce the spherical transform in these contexts. In addition, Lassalle's results on the holomorphic extension of spherical Fourier series are given. In Section 2, the authors state Ramanujan's Master Theorem for Riemannian symmetric spaces in duality. By analogy with the classical version of this theorem, a normalizing factor \(b\) appears in the statement of the Master Theorem for symmetric spaces. In Section 3, the choice of the function \(b\) is explained. Its explicit expression is determined in Section 4, using a relation between the Plancherel densities for symmetric spaces in duality. Examples for Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank one or with even root multiplicities are presented. Section 5 collects several estimates which will be needed in the proof of Ramanujan's Master Theorem. This theorem is proved in Section 6. In Section 7, the authors extend the theorem to reductive Riemannian symmetric spaces. Finally, in Section 8, some further possible extensions of Ramanujan's Theorem are discussed and some open problems are presented.
