This paper concerns the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of square free monomial ideals generated in degree 3. Recall that it is an open question to describe all square free monomial ideals generated in degree 3 having linear resolution. In this paper the authors consider clutters instead simplicial complexes. Given a square free monomials ideal \(I\), the exponents of a minimal system of generators of \(I\) defines a clutter, conversely any clutter defines a square free monomial ideal. Hence, square free monomial ideals and clutters can be identified. The authors define some operations on clutters by using ideas from algebraic geometry, and they show that Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is preserved under such operations. A first application is done to study a class of square free monomial ideals generated in degree 3, having linear resolution. A second application proves that any clutter corresponding to a triangulation of the sphere does not have linear resolution while any proper subclutter of it has a linear resolution. | |||
