The paper takes up an almost forgotten subject concerning the class of tiled orders in a central simple algebra over a local field. Here they are called ``monomial orders''. The investigation is based on a recent paper of Jiu-Kang Yu who observed that the tensor product of two hereditary orders admits a finite étale extension which is tiled, a special case of the fact that important classes of non-maximal orders have tiled ``coverings''. For example, every representation-finite order in a complete division algebra has such a hidden structure. In the paper under review, the authors give a combinatorial characterization of Gorenstein and Bass tiled orders.
