It was shown in [\textit{J. A. Giannini} and \textit{R. I. Joseph}, Phys. Lett. A 141, No. 8--9, 417--419 (1989)] that the Painlevé II equation with zero parameter appears from symmetry reductions for a cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In this paper, extending this result, the authors show that a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations involving a triad of power law terms together with a de Broglie-Bohm potential admits a symmetry reduction either to the Painlevé II equation with non-zero parameter or to a hybrid Ermakov-Painlevé II equation. Furthermore, some Korteweg-type capillary system is shown to be encapsulated in such a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Combining these two results, the authors succeed in constructing novel classes of exact solutions of the nonlinear capillarity system in terms of Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomials or the Airy functions via iterated application of Bäcklund transformations.
