It is well known [see for example, \textit{G. G. Kasparov}, J. Oper. Theory 4, 133-150 (1980; Zbl 0456.46059)] that in the operator K-theory, the \(C^*\)-Hilbert module \(\ell_ 2(A)\) plays such an important role as the separable Hilbert spaces for the usual K-theory. For this reason, it is interesting to consider the Kuiper's type theorems concerning the homotopy type of the (complete) general A-linear group GL and its subgroup \(GL^*\) consisting of the A-homomorphisms admitting ``dual A- homomorphism''. For the last subgroup, \(GL^*\), \textit{V. A. Kasimov} [Mat. Sb. Nov. Ser. 119, No.3(11), 376-386 (1982; Zbl 0507.46061)] and \textit{J. A. Mingo} [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 5, 888-891 (1982; Zbl 0494.46064)] independently proved its contractibility and the author [Vestn. Mosk. Univ., Ser. I 1985, No.1, 96-98 (1985; Zbl 0573.55014)] used if for constructing the classifying spaces for the topological operator K-theory. In the paper under review the author proves the Kuiper type contractibility theorem for GL. It is pointed out in the last section some necessary modification for a shorter proof of contractibility of \(GL^*\), than that given by Kasimov and Mingo.
