The author studies the moduli space \(M_ 2\) of stable rank-2 bundles with \(c_ 1=0\), \(c_ 2=2\) on the Hirzebruch surface \(\pi: H_ n={\mathbb{P}}({\mathcal O}\oplus {\mathcal O}(n))\to {\mathbb{P}}^ 1\) with respect to the projective embedding \(\Phi_{{\mathcal O}(1,1)}: H_ n\to {\mathbb{P}}^{n+3}.\) \(M_ 2\) has a compactification \(\bar M{}_ 2\) isomorphic to a certain projective bundle \({\mathbb{P}}F\) over \({\mathbb{P}}^ 2\). An explicit description of the 4-bundle F is given. For \(n>0\) the boundary \(\bar M{}_ 2\setminus M_ 2\) is isomorphic to \(S^ 2H_ n\) as expected by the work of Donaldson, whereas the case \(n=0\) is more special. For the quadric \(H_ 0\subset {\mathbb{P}}^ 3\) \textit{J. Le Poitier} gave essentially the same description [in: Mathématique et Physique, Sém. Éc. Norm. Supér., Paris 1979-1982, Prog. Math. 37, 65-137 (1983; Zbl 0532.14003)].
