The paper deals with the preasymptotic error estimates of the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method (IPDG) of high order for the Helmholtz problem \[ -\Delta u-k^2 u =f\text{ in }\Omega, \] \[ \frac{\partial u}{\partial n}+i k u=g\text{ on }\Gamma, \] where \(\Omega\) is a bounded two- or three-dimensional domain with smooth boundary \(\Gamma\), \(n\) denotes the unit outward normal to the boundary and \(i=\sqrt{-1}\) is the imaginary unit. The preasymptotic error estimates include the pollution error which is significant both in theory and practice and is proportional to \(c k(kh)^{2p}\text{inf}_{v_h \in V_h}\frac{\|u-u_h\|_{V}}{\|u\|_{V}}\), \(\beta>0\), where \(h\) is the mesh size, \(p\) is the order of the approximation space, \(k>>1\) is the wave number and \(c\) is a constant independent of \(h,p,k\). Numerical tests verify the theoretical results and illustrate great capability of the symmetric IPDG in reducing the pollution effect.
