The authors study the behavior of nonnegative solutions to the problem \[ u_t=\Delta (u^m)+a(x)u^p,\;\;u(x,0)=u_0(x) \] in \(\mathbb {R}^n\times (0,T)\). The functions \(a\) and \(u_0\) are supposed to be compactly supported. They distinguish the case \(n=2\) and \(n\geq 3\), and show that the solutions may exist globally or blow up in finite time in dependence on the relation between \(m\) and \(p\), the form of the function \(a\) and the size of \(u_0.\)
