For \(\alpha>-1\) and \(1\leq p <\infty\), let \(A^p_\alpha\) denote the weighted Bergman space on the unit disk \(\mathbb{D}=\{z\in\mathbb{C}: |z|<1\}\). Recall that every analytic self-map \(\varphi\) of the unit disk gives rise to a bounded composition operator \(C_\varphi\) on \(A^p_\alpha\), where \(C_\varphi f = f\circ \varphi\). For \(\varepsilon>0\), put \[ \Omega_\varepsilon = \left\{z\in\mathbb{D}: \frac{1-|z|^2}{1-|\varphi(z)|^2} >\varepsilon \right\}. \] The authors show that \(C_\varphi\) is closed-range on any \(A^p_\alpha\) precisely when there exist \(\varepsilon>0\), \(M>1\) and a subset \(U\) of \(\Omega_\varepsilon\) such that \(\varphi(U)\) contains an annulus \(\{w\in\mathbb{C}: r<|w|<1\}\) for some \(r\in(0,1)\), and \(\frac{1}{M} \leq |\varphi^\prime(z)| \leq M\) for all \(z\in U\). This improves earlier results obtained by \textit{J.\,Akeroyd, P.\,Ghatage} and \textit{M.\,Tjani} [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 68, No.\,4, 503--517 (2010; Zbl 1237.47026)]. Implications for the Frostman Blaschke products are also discussed.
