The problem of the stability for line solitary waves of the two dimensional Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation \(u_t+\partial_x(\Delta u+u^2)=0\) for \((t,x,y)\in {\mathbb R}\times{\mathbb R}\times {\mathbb R}/2\pi L{\mathbb Z}\) is studied. The orbital and asymptotic stability of one soliton of the Korteweg-de Vries equation on the energy space has been proved by Benjamin, Pego-Weinstein, and Martel-Merle. The author regards one soliton of the Korteweg-de Vries equation as a line solitary wave of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. He proves the stability and the transverse instability of the line solitary waves of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. Moreover, he shows the asymptotic stability for orbitally stable line solitary waves of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. If L is the critical period with respect to a line solitary wave, the line solitary wave is orbitally stable. However, since this line solitary wave is a bifurcation point of the stationary equation, the linearized operator of the stationary equation is degenerate. Because of the degeneracy of the linearized operator, to show the Liouville type theorem for the line solitary wave, a virial type estimate is modified.
