A map \(f: X_1 \times \cdots \times X_n \to Y_1 \times \cdots \times Y_n\) between two products is called factorwise rigid if there is a bijection \(\epsilon: \{1,\ldots,n\} \to \{1,\ldots,n\}\) and maps \(f_i: X_i \to Y_{\epsilon(i)}\) such that \((f(x))_{\epsilon(i)} = f_i(x_i)\) for each \(x \in X_1 \times \cdots \times X_n\) and \(i \in \{1,\ldots,n\}\). \textit{R. Cauty} in [Bull. Acad. Pol. Sci., Sér. Sci. Math. 27, 413--416 (1979; Zbl 0416.54028)] proved: Let \(X_i, Y_i\) be locally connected curves with dense families of circles (each open subset of \(X_i, Y_i\), \(i\in \{1,\ldots,n\}\) contains a simple closed curve). Then every homeomorphism \(X_1 \times \cdots \times X_n \to Y_1 \times \cdots \times Y_n\) is factorwise rigid. The author extends this result for embeddings between products of certain higher dimensional continua which need not be locally connected or arcwise connected. The assumptions are substituted by cohomological connectedness and dense families of cohomological holes (each open subset of a \(k\)-dimensional continuum \(X\) contains a cohomologically \((k-1)\)-connected continuum). The main result obtained is the following: Let \(X_i\) be \(k\)-dimensional continua with dense families of cohomological holes and \(Y_i\) be cohomologically \((k-1)\)-connected. Then any embedding \(X_1 \times \cdots \times X_n \to Y_1 \times \cdots \times Y_n\) is factorwise rigid. An analogous result is stated in terms of shape theory; the assumption used is that a continuum \(X\) has a dense family of shape holes.
