The authors consider the initial boundary-value problem for the generalized Rosenau-Burgers equation. More specifically, the differential operator contains a derivative of a power term of the unknown function. For numerical solution of the problem a three-layer average implicit finite difference scheme of the second order in time and space on a uniform mesh in spatial and temporal variable is constructed. The scheme is linear and more efficient in calculation than the relative Crank-Nicolson finite difference scheme on the same stencil. It is shown that the scheme is uniquely solvable, convergent and stable. Numerical examples are given. This paper is related to the paper by \textit{K. Zheng} and \textit{J. Hu} [``Crank-Nicolson difference scheme for the generalized Rosenau-Burgers equation'', Int. J. Math. Comput. Sci. 5, No.~4, 252--256 (2009)].
