Let \((\Omega, \Sigma, \mu)\) be a \(\sigma\)-finite measure space, let \(E\) be an ideal of \(L_0(\mu)\), and let \(X,Y\) be real Banach spaces. The symbol \(E(X)\) denotes the subspace of \(L_0(X)\) consisting of all \(f \in L_0(X)\) with \(\| f ( \cdot) \| \in E\). One of the main results asserts that, if \(X\) is an Asplund space, then every order-weakly compact operator \(T: E(X) \to Y\) admits a unique representation \(T = T_1+T_2\), where \(T_1, T_2\) are order-weakly compact, \(T_1\) is smooth and \(T_2\) is weakly singular (in the terminology of \textit{A. Basile}, \textit{A. V. Bukhvalov} and \textit{M. Ya. Yakubson} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 116, No.~3, 527--533 (1994; Zbl 0845.47026)]).
