The nonlinear second order equation \[ \frac{d^2x}{dt^2}+\frac{1}{2}\phi _x(\frac{dx}{dt})^2+\phi _t\frac{dx}{dt}+B(t, x)=0, \] where \(\phi =\phi (t, x)\), is known as the Jacobi equation. The paper under review studies the Jacobi equation from the point of view of Lie point symmetries and partial Lagrangians. The Lie-Tressé method is used to obtain linearizing point transformations of some classes of equations contained in the Painlevé-Gambier classification. The partial Lagrangian approach is utilized to obtain partial Noether operators and a number of interesting time-dependent and time-independent first integrals. The complete integrability of some Painlevé-Gambier equations is provided with these first integrals.
