The dynamics of slow relaxation to the spatially periodic solutions of the Swift-Hohenberg equations, modelling the transition to convective rolls in the Rayleigh-Bénard problem, is studied using the ``Phase Dynamics Method''. The idea is to consider the spatially periodic solutions as a smooth manifold of equilibria by phase shift under the periodic boundary conditions. The dynamics on the (relatively weak) local stable manifold is approximately reduced to the linear heat equation. With this example the author attempted successfully to give a rigorous justification of the Phase Dynamics Method.
