Let S be a minimal algebraic surface of general type, defined over \({\mathbb{C}}\), satisfying \(c^ 2_ 1=3p_ g-6\). It is said to be of type I, type II or type III if the degree of its canonical map is 1, 2 or 3. In this article, a complete description of type I surfaces is given by using a classical argument due to Castelnuovo. It is shown that most of them have a pencil of nonhyperelliptic curves of genus 3 and that the canonical image is contained in a threefold of \(\Delta\)-genus \(\leq 1.\) It is also shown that type III surfaces satisfy \(p_ g\leq 5\).
