[For Part I see Transformation groups, Proc. Conf., Osaka 1987, Lect. Notes Math. 1375, 240-258 (1989; Zbl 0693.57018).] The author proves that all standard spheres \(S^ n\), \(n=6\) or \(n\geq 9\) have smooth actions by the alternating group \(A_ 5\), with only one fixed point. The technical tools needed are Bak's modified surgery obstruction groups \(W_ n({\mathbb{Z}}[G],\Gamma;w)\), where \(\Gamma\subseteq{\mathbb{Z}}[G]\) is generated by all \(a+\bar a\) and all involutions in \(G\), and \(G\)-surgery theory. There is considerable overlap with the work of other authors, notably \textit{N. Buchdahl}, \textit{S. Kwasik} and \textit{R. Schultz} [Invent. Math. 102, 633-662 (1990)].
