Various inequalities of the form \[ \int_0^\ell A(\Theta(x,f))\,dx \leq c \int_ 0^ \ell A(f(x))\,dx, \tag{*} \] where \(\Theta(x,f)=\displaystyle\sup_{0\leq\xi<x} \frac{1}{x-\xi}\int_\xi^x | f(t)| \,dt\), are established, generalizing the classical Hardy inequalities. For example, if \(A(t)\) is a Young function satisfying \(pA(t) \leq tA'(t)\leq qA(t)\) \((1<p\leq q)\), inequality (*) is obtained with a constant \(c(p,q)\) which is strictly smaller than the constant obtained by \textit{Y.-M. Chen} [Math. Z. 69, 105--120 (1958; Zbl 0081.06102); ibid. 418--422 (1958; Zbl 0084.06301)]. Also inequalities of the form: \[ A^{-1}\left(\frac{1}{\ell}\int_0^\ell A\left(\frac{1}{x}\int_0^x f(t)\,dt\right)\,dx\right) \leq cA^{-1}\left(\frac{1}{\ell}\int_0^\ell A(f(x))\,dx\right) \] are considered.
