In this very interesting paper the following result about modular representation theory of the finite symmetric groups \(S_ n\) is proved: Theorem: The blocks of the symmetric groups with a given weight \(w>0\) over a field of characteristic \(p\) can be collected into families according to the shapes of their cores. Each family consists of Morita equivalent blocks. The number of such families is at most \(\prod_{i=1}^{p}[(i-1)(w-1)+1]\) and each family contains a block of some \(S_ n\), where \(n\) is less than or equal to \(p^ 2(p-1)^ 2(w- 1)^ 2/4+wp\). This result shows, as has been suspected for a long time, that there is only a finite number of possibilities for the decomposition matrix for blocks with a given defect in symmetric groups.
