Classical Schlichting's solutions for a steady laminar round or planar jet in a homogeneous fluid demonstrate that a longitudinal velocity \((U_ 0)\) on the jet axis depends on distance \((x)\) from the jet origin as \(U_ 0\sim x^{-1}\) (round jet) and as \(U_ 0\sim x^{-1/3}\) (planar jet). The question arises whether the horizontal steady jet in a density stratified fluid (where the gravity suppresses the vertical motion and the flow is quasi-planar) will be similar to the round jet or to the planar one? To answer this question we have done some experiments and a theoretical analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations.
