    Let \(K\) be a field of characteristic 0, and \(L\) a certain regular Galois extension of \(K(t)\) with Galois group \(A_ n\) constructed by \textit{J. F. Mestre} [J. Algebra 131, 483-495 (1990; Zbl 0714.11074)] for which \textit{J. P. Serre}'s obstruction [Comment. Math. Helv. 59, 651-676 (1984; Zbl 0565.12014)] to embedding \(L\) into an \(\tilde A_ n\)-extension over \(K(t)\) vanishes. \((A_ n\): the alternating group of degree \(n\), \(\tilde A_ n\): the unique non-trivial central extension of \(A_ n\) by \(\{\pm 1\})\). In this paper, for odd \(n\geq 5\), a special element \(\gamma\in L\) is constructed explicitly so that the quadratic extensions \(L(\sqrt{r\gamma})\) for \(r\in K(t)^ \times\) (resp. for \(r\in K^ \times)\) give all the extensions (resp. geometrically unramified extensions) \(E\) of \(L\) with \(Gal(E/K(t))\cong\tilde A_ n\). (The existence of such a \(\gamma\) had been assured group-theoretically by J.- P. Serre.) In a part of the proof, a result of \textit{T. Crespo} [J. Algebra 127, 452-461 (1989; Zbl 0704.11043)] is applied.
