Suppose that \(\varphi\) is a map of the unit disk \(D\) into itself and consider the composition operator \(C_ \varphi f=f\circ\varphi\) acting on some Hilbert space of functions on \(D\). It is shown that if \(C_ \varphi^*\) is subnormal on the Hardy space \(H^ 2\), it is also subnormal on the Bergman space \(L_ a^ 2\). The author also points out that this result extends, with a similar proof, to any pair \(H\), \(K\) of Hilbert spaces of functions on \(D\) for which the kernel functions \(h_ \alpha\) and \(k_ \alpha\) are related by \(k_ \alpha=F(h_ \alpha)\), where \(F(z)=\sum_ 0^ \infty c_ n z^ n\), \(c_ n\geq 0\). The above result corresponds to \(F(z)=z^ 2\).
