This is a somewhat technical paper requiring several definitions. The space of finite sequences of real (or complex) numbers can be given the norm: \(\|x\|_S := \sup_A\{\sum_{j \in A}|x_j|\}\) where the supremum is taken over those sets \(A = \{n_1 <n_2< \cdots <n_k\}\) for which \(k \leq n_1\). \textit{J. Schreier}'s space \(S\) [Stud. Math. 2, 58-62 (1930; JFM 56.0932.02)] is the completion of this space. A Banach space \(X\) has the Dunford-Pettis Property (DPP) if for every pair of sequences \((x_n) \subset X\) and \((\varphi_n) \subset X^*\) converging weakly to \(0\) one has \(\varphi_n(x_n) \rightarrow 0.\) A subset \(A\) of \(X\) is a Banach-Saks set if every sequence in \(A\) has a subsequence whose arithmetic means converge in norm and \(X\) has the Banach-Saks Property (BSP) if every bounded set is a Banach-Saks set. The authors consider two weakened versions of these properties -- wDPP and wBSP respectively. They show that every closed subspace of \(S\) has wDPP and that \(S^*\) has the wBSP but not wDPP. They also characterize the Banach-Saks sets in \(S\) as those that are relatively compact in a ``polynomial'' topology and hence show that the absolutely closed convex hull of a Banach-Saks set in \(S\) is again Banach-Saks.
