The authors consider the two-point boundary value problem \[ (1)_\mu \qquad\quad-v''=\mu (v^q+v^p+k v), \quad a\leq x \leq b; \;v>0,\;a < x < b, \;v(a)=v(b)=0, \] where \(0 < q < 1 < p\) and \(k \geq 0\) are fixed given numbers and \(\mu > 0\) is a parameter. They prove that there exists a number \(\mu^*\in (0, \infty)\) such that: \((i)\) for \(\mu > \mu^*\) problem \((1)_\mu\) has no solution; \((ii)\) for \(\mu = \mu^*\) problem \((1)_\mu\) has exactly one solution; \((iii)\) for \(0 < \mu < \mu^*\) problem \((1)_\mu\) has exactly two solutions \(v_{\mu,1}\) and \(v_{\mu,2}\) with \(v_{\mu,1} < v_{\mu,2}\) in \((a,b)\). This result improves previous works of \textit{A. Ambrosetti, H. Brezis} and \textit{G. Cerami} [J. Funct. Anal. 122, No. 2, 519-543 (1994; Zbl 0805.35028)] and of the first author and \textit{F. Li} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 203, No. 3, 610-625 (1996; Zbl 0878.34016)] for the case \(k=0\).
