The authors introduce an analog \(\sigma\) of \(\mu^2\), where \(\mu\) denotes the classical Möbius function, on the set of half-integral \(n\times n\) matrices of degree \(n\) by means of a recursion formula. \(\sigma\) depends only on the genus of the quadratic form. The main result consists of a relation between the Koecher-Maaß Dirichlet series of a Siegel modular form \(f\) and the standard \(L\)-function associated with \(f\) involving \(\sigma\). In addition an alternative proof of the main result on the zeta functions for symmetric matrices by \textit{T. Ibukiyama} and \textit{H. Saito} [Am. J. Math. 117, 1097-1155 (1995; Zbl 0846.11028)] is derived.
