In this very interesting paper the author gives a homological foundation for his generalization of the classical Hecke algebras [introduced in Commun. Math. Phys. 204, No. 1, 137-146 (1999; Zbl 0977.16020)]. Further, the author introduces the semi-infinite cohomology functor for associative algebras and defines a new modification of Hecke algebras acting in the semi-infinite cohomology spaces. These algebras are called the semi-infinite Hecke algebras. It is shown that the \(W\)-algebra \(W_k({\mathfrak g})\), associated with a complex semi-simple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\), can be realized as a semi-infinite Hecke algebra. This allows the author to calculate the algebra \(W_k({\mathfrak g})\) explicitly, avoiding the bosonization technique, used for these purposes by Feigin and Frenkel. The paper consists of three big chapters (Hecke algebras; Semi-infinite cohomology; and Semi-infinite Hecke algebras) and five appendices. Three of these appendices contain the (technically very difficult) proofs of some statements, omitted in the main text.
