Let \(G(p^n)\) be a finite group defined over a field of \(p^n\) elements with \(p\) a prime. In the present paper, the author shows how to write the Deligne-Lusztig characters of \(G(p^n)\) in terms of so-called \(p\)-adic coding, and then to decompose projective indecomposable characters of \(G(p^n)\) into ordinary irreducible characters variing with \(n\). Also, he shows how generic Cartan invariants of \(G(p^n)\) can be calculated using his method. As applications he determines the decomposition of projective indecomposable characters for \(\text{SL}_3(p^n)\) and \(\text{SU}_3(p^n)\) and the Cartan invariants for \(\text{SL}_3(p^n)\) and \(\text{SU}_3(p^n)\).
