Let \(A\) be a regular (commutative) ring of finite Krull dimension and let \(J\) be an ideal of \(A\). Suppose that \(J\) is generated by a regular sequence of length \(r\), and that \(A/J\) is regular. The main result is that, for all \(i\in \mathbb{Z}\), there are isomorphisms of Witt groups \[ W^i(A/J) \cong W_J^{i+r} (A). \] This result is a consequence of more general results concerning localization sequences for Witt groups of triangulated categories of bounded complexes of modules over schemes; the statements and proofs of these results are deep and technical. The main result has several nice `classical' consequences. Suppose that \(R\) is regular with finite Krull dimension. Then for \(i\in \mathbb{Z}\), \[ W^i (\mathbb{P}^1_R) \cong W^i(R) \oplus W^{i-1} (R) \] and \[ W^i\bigl( R[T,T^{-1}] \bigr)\cong W^i(R) \oplus W^i(R). \] The first of these isomorphisms shows that \(W(R)= W(\mathbb{P}^1_R)\) when \(R\) is local or \(\dim R\leq 2\) since then \(W^{-1}(R)=0\).
