Let \(G\) be an abelian group written additively and \(f : G \to G\) be a function satisfying the composite functional equation \[ f(x+2f(y) ) = f(x) + y + f(y) \text{ for all } x, y \in G.\tag{\(*\)} \] The authors show that every solution \(f\) of the functional equation \((*)\) is an automorphism of the group \(G\) such that \(2f(f(y)) = y+f(y)\) holds for all \(y \in G\). The authors construct all solutions \(f\) of the equation \((*)\) on finite abelian groups without elements of order 3 and on divisible abelian groups without elements of order 3 including the additive group of real numbers.
