Let \(R\) be a commutative Noetherian ring and \(X\) a complex of \(R\)-modules. The restricted projective dimension of \(X\) is defined to be \(\text{Rpd}_R X = \sup\{-\inf(\mathbf{R}\text{Hom}_R(X, T)) \mid T\) is an \(R\)-module of finite injective dimension\(\}\) [\textit{L. W. Christensen} et al., J. Algebra 251, No. 1, 479--502 (2002; Zbl 1073.13501)]. The word ``restricted'' means that \(T\) runs over only modules of finite injective dimension. In this article, the authors give a new notion ``restricted projective modules'' and another characterization of the restricted projective dimension. An \(R\)-module \(M\) is called a restricted projective module if \(\text{Ext}_R^i(M, T) = 0\) for any \(i > 0\) and any \(R\)-module \(T\) of finite injective dimension. The authors show that \(\text{Rpd}_R X = n\) if and only if there is a complex \(P\) such that \(P\) is equivalent to \(X\) in the derived category, all \(P_i\) are restricted projective, \(P_n \neq 0\) and \(P_i = 0\) for any \(i > n\). They also compare the restricted projective dimension and the Gorenstein dimension and observe a behavior of the restricted projective dimension under base change.
