An important open problem in symplectic geometry is to derive compact examples of complex manifolds having a tamed symplectic structure but non-admitting a Kähler structure. The present paper is devoted to some negative results of this type on compact quotients of Lie groups by discrete subgroups. For example, the authors obtain that if \(M\) is a nilmanifold different from a torus endowed with an invariant complex structure \(J\) then \(M\) does not admit a symplectic form taming \(J\). Another important result is a classification of \(8\)-dimensional nilmanifolds endowed with an invariant complex structure and admitting a strong Kähler metric with torsion.
