The problem of pattern formation in physical systems can be considered as a result of two competing forces which are respectively growth and inhibition, and the concept of stationary set (a variation of Caccioppoli sets) has been introduced to analyze this system. The present paper proposes a basis for the analysis of stationary sets of which the interfaces meet the domain boundary. The main topics which are so considered are as follows. Reflection about domain boundary, related Hilbert spaces, first and second variation of an integral on a set, minimization among centered sets, center considered as a deformation parameter, and existence and location of a stationary set. All the material is related to functional analysis.
