A class of hybrid boundary element methods is presented. The exterior scattering problem under consideration is a two-dimensional smooth convex sound-soft obstacle. The Galerkin approximation spaces are enriched into the algebraic and trigonometric polynomial approximation spaces to facilitate the applicability of the algorithm for the entire frequency spectrum which is achieved by incorporating the oscillations in the incident field of radiation. The authors derive three distinctive properties. First, they can be tuned such that only an \(\mathcal{O}(k^\epsilon)\) increase (for any \(\epsilon>0\)) in the number of degrees of freedom to maintain a fixed accuracy with increasing wavenumber \(k\) is present which is due to the optimal adaptation of approximation spaces to asymptotic stretching (shrinking) of the illuminated and deep shadow regions (shadow boundaries). Second, they are convergent for each wavenumber \(k\) (fixed) which is due to the additional approximation spaces in the deep shadow region. Third, they yield linear systems with significantly enhanced condition numbers and thus allows for more accurate solutions.
