Let \(G/K\) be a Riemannian symmetric space, where \(G\) is a non-compact connected Lie group and \(K\) is a compact connected subgroup fixed by a Cartan involution on \(G\). Orbital measures are measures on \(G\) of the form \(\nu_z= m_K* \delta_z *m_K\), where \(m_K\) is the Haar measure on \(K\), \(z\in G\). Let \(L(G)\) be the minimal integer such that any convolution product of \(L(G)\) orbital measures on \(G\) is absolutely continuous with respect to the Haar measure. In the paper under review the authors find the number \(L(G)\) when \(G/K\) is an exceptional symmetric space. The number \(L(G)\) is either 2 or 3, depending on the Cartan type, and in most cases is strictly less than the rank of \(G\).
