    In the paper first (Section 2) the homology of the Lie algebra \(\mathcal L_ 3\) of polynomial vector fields on \(\mathbb C\) with trivial 3-jet at the origin is computed with coefficients in a quasi-finite irreducible highest weight representation over the Virasoro algebra. Consider a deformation \(\mathcal L_{1,1}\) of the Lie algebra \(\mathcal L_ 3\) as follows. The Lie algebra \(\mathcal L_{1,1}\) consists of vector fields on the line vanishing at two given points with their first derivative. In Section 3 the authors show that the cohomology with coefficients in a quasi-finite representation does not change under this deformation. The proofs in Sections 2 and 3 are based on the authors' previous results on singular vectors in Verma modules [see Lect. Notes Math. 1060, 230--245 (1984; Zbl 0549.17010)]. In Section 4 the similar Kac-Moody situation is discussed. The role of \(\mathcal L_ 3\) plays the commutant of the maximal nilpotent subalgebra of a Kac-Moody algebra \(\mathfrak g\). The analogous cohomology coefficients are irreducible \(\mathfrak g\)-modules with a regular integral dominant highest weight. Some conjectures are stated on the cohomology, and the authors compute it in special cases. Section 5 contains some comments on the physical interpretation of the results, among others a mathematical construction of the operation of creation in conformal field theory. The results of Section 3 are generalized to a Lie algebra of vector fields on the line, vanishing with the first derivative in finitely many points. This last Section contains a lot of ideas but almost no proofs. It is based on a forthcoming paper of the first author and \textit{A. A. Beilinson} [Representation theory and conformal field theory].
