Let \(R\) be a prime ring with Utumi quotient ring \(U\), and noncentral Lie ideal \(L\). A generalized derivation of \(R\) is an additive \(G\colon R\to R\) so that for all \(x,y\in R\), \(G(xy)=G(x)y+xd(y)\) for some \(d\in\text{Der}(R)\). The author studies the situation when \(H\) and \(G\) are nonzero generalized derivations of \(R\) for which there is a positive integer \(n\) satisfying \((H(x)x-xG(x))^n=0\) for all \(x\in L\). He proves that one of three conclusions must hold: (1) \(H(r)=rc\) and \(G(r)=cr\) for some \(c\in U\) and all \(r\in R\); (2) \(\text{char\,}R=2\) and \(R\) satisfies the standard polynomial identity \(s_4\) of degree four; or (3) \(R\) satisfies \(s_4\) and there are \(a,b,c\in U\) so that \(H(r)=ar+rc\), \(G(r)=cr+rb\), and \((a-b)^n=0\). The theorem is proved first when \(H\) and \(G\) are inner generalized derivations.
