The author generalizes the notion of essential codimension using \(KK\)-theory and shows that if the `essential codimension' of two projections vanishes for certain \(C^*\)-algebras, then there is a unitary of the form `identity plus compact' which gives unitary equivalence of these projections. This result is applied to lift projections in the corona algebra of \(C(X)\otimes B\), where \(X\) is one-dimensional.
