The paper is concerned with the existence of homoclinic solutions for the following second order non-autonomous system \[ \ddot q+c\dot q +U_q(t,q)=0, \tag{1} \] where \(q\in\mathbb R^n\), \(c\geq 0\) is a constant and \(U\in C^1(\mathbb R\times\mathbb R^n,\mathbb R)\). A solution \(q(t)\) of (1) is homoclinic (to 0) if \(q(t)\to 0\) and \(\dot q(t)\to 0\) as \(t\to\pm\infty\). Under some reasonable assumptions, the concept of a Fast Homoclinic Solution (FHS) to (1) is introduced and some criteria that guarantee the existence of a FHS to (1) are established. In addition, in some particular case, the uniqueness of homoclinic solutions of (1) is also obtained. Some open problems resulting from the paper's results are briefly discussed. The results obtained in the paper generalize and significantly improve recent results in the literature on the subject.
